Signing the Principles for Responsible Banking, Şekerbank once again attested that sustainability lies in the heart of its activities and strategies.

Şekerbank takes on a pioneering role in financing sustainable development and sets its sustainability strategy and business objectives in line with international principles and commitments. As part of its efforts in this field, the Bank became a founding signatory of the Principles for Responsible Banking launched by United Nations Environment Programme - Finance Initiative (UNEP FI).

With 130 banks from around the world with a total asset size of over 47 trillion dollars acting as founding signatories, Principles for Responsible Banking were launched on September the 22nd in New York, during the United Nation’s General Assembly.

By signing the Principles for Responsible Banking, Şekerbank took part in the coalition formed by 130 banks from around world and committed to play a key role in building a sustainable future.

Providing a single framework for the development of a sustainable banking industry, these principles address six main topics including alignment, impact and target setting, clients and customers, stakeholders, governance and culture, and transparency and accountability. The principles are intended to align the banking sector with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, while reinforcing its responsibility to shape a sustainable future.

Erdal Erdem: “For 66 years, we have been taking on a pioneering role in financing sustainable development.”

Expressing their joy at being a founding signatory of the Principles for Responsible Banking, Şekerbank’s General Manager Erdal Erdem said the following: “Established by hundreds of thousands of farmers in Anatolia to support production-driven economic development and sustainable agriculture, Şekerbank has been taking on a pioneering role in financing sustainable development for 66 years, guided by a responsible banking approach. Our Bank sets its mission for sustainable development in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and hence grouped its operations under such goals in 2015. As a prerequisite of our founding mission, our Bank has now become a founding signatory of the “Principles for Responsible Banking”. At Şekerbank, we will continue to provide an exemplary banking model for social development, protection of our environment and enhancing welfare, while improving our social and environmental benefits and delivering on our commitments.”
